On Sunday, April 15, 2012, the angels took her to heaven. She was 80 years old. Jo Nell, of Sweetwater, was born Jan. 16, 1932, in Luther, TX to Mildred Lawrence and Lester Caughey. At the age of 15, she and her family moved to the Stephenville area where she graduated from Stephenville High School and met her life partner, Carl Max Burgan. Jo Nell and Carl Max married on Aug. 17, 1950, in Ft. Worth where they lived until moving to Sweetwater in 1953.
She is survived by her husband, Carl; one sister, Jean McClimans of Arlington; children, Dale Burgan of Sweetwater and Teresa Sennett of Havana, IL; grandchildren, Sharon Froman of Pawnee, IL and Shane Sennett of Havana, IL; seven great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and in-laws.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Hugh Willis Caughey; and sister, Monette Buntin.
Jo was primarily a homemaker, wife, mother and grandmother but did work as a clerk at the old Levi’s and C.R. Anthony’s Department stores. Later in life she worked for several years at Lang Aycock Child Care Center to satisfy her love for children. Jo is probably best remembered by her friends and family for her compassion and kind heart. She was soft spoken, non-judgmental, never had a bad word for anyone and was loved by all that knew her.
Funeral arrangements are being provided by McCoy Funeral Home in Sweetwater. Services will be on Wednesday, April 18, 2012, at 1 p.m. at the Lamar Street Baptist Church and officiated by Pastor Jerry Payne. The service will be followed by her burial at Sweetwater Cemetery.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the West Texas Rehabilitation Center or to a charity of the donor's choice.
