The Community Captains of Sweetwater, along with the 32nd Judicial Bar Association, will be hosting a Juneteenth Basketball Tournament Fundraiser on Friday and Saturday, June 20 and 21, at both Sweetwater Middle School gyms. The tournament will be five on five style with three divisions: 18 and under (boys), 18 and under (girls), and adults.
Any teams in Sweetwater and the surrounding areas that are interested in signing up for the tournament should contact the Community Captains by Wednesday, June 18. There is a $200 fee per adult team and a $150 fee for any team of under 18s. Teams are encouraged to get creative with their team names and shirts.
There will be a first place prize for each division. A three point contest, open to anyone, will also be held for a $5 entry fee. A prize will be awarded for the winner of the three point contest.
Proceeds from the tournament will go towards a reward trip for the members of the Community Captains. "We want to reward everyone's hard work and effort these past months," said Nemesis Armstead, one of the founding members of the Captains.
The Community Captains are a civic group made up of children, young adults and adults that strive to give back to the community. "The young men and women in our program are learning to face challenges head on and find solutions," added Armstead. "They're taking their future into their hands. We want everyone to know that these men and women are working hard to better other's lives as well as their own."
