Junior Leaguers start bracket play with big win at district tourney

Sweetwater’s 13-14 year-old Junior League all-stars began bracket play Friday with a convincing 14-4 win over Breckenridge. However, Sweetwater’s 11-12 year-old Little League all-stars came up just short, 8-7, in their bracket game against Abilene Southern and needed a bounceback win Saturday over Merkel to avoid elimination at their District 5 Little League tournament. The Junior Leaguers were to play Clyde in a winners bracket game on Saturday afternoon at Abilene North.The 10-11 year-old all-stars won, 10-8, over Abil-ene Eastern in their second pool game at Wylie’s field to keep alive their hopes of advancing to bracket play as they improved to 1-1 in pool play with two pool games left. All teams who finish pool play with one loss or fewer advance to bracket play, which is double elimination with games at Wylie starting Wednesday. Wylie (2-0), Abilene Eastern (2-1), Clyde (1-1) and Sweetwater were eligible after Friday. Sweet-water played Abilene Sou-thern (0-3) on Saturday morning.The 9-10 year-old all-stars needed a win over Cisco on Saturday morning to avoid elimination at their District 5 tournament. Sweetwater began play on Thursday by losing to Jim Ned 13-10.All four of the tourna-ments will continue through this week with title games on Friday.
