SNYDER — It wasn’t easy. It never is at Snyder.
But after allowing the host team to tie the match with a decisive Game 2 win, Sweetwater rallied to win Friday’s District 4-3A volleyball match in four games by scores of 25-18, 14-25, 25-22, 25-22.
With the victory, Sweet-water (2-3, 11-18) broke out of a fourth-place district tie with the Lady Tigers, who fell to 1-4, 10-16.
“I didn’t think we played all that great, but it’s always hard over there,” Sweetwa-ter coach Liz Miller said. “It was a big game for both teams. I’m glad we were able to come out on top.”
The Lady Mustangs went ahead to stay early in Game 3, but Snyder closed within 24-22 until Mikeilah Foust hit a game-winning kill.
The fourth game was sim-ilar, as Sweetwater went up to stay at 8-7 — but led just 23-22 until scoring the last two points of the match, ending with a kill by Kayla Chowning.
Shaneese Brown finished with a team-high 15 kills and four blocks, along with six digs. Morgan Gomez led Sweetwater with 23 digs in the match, and Aly Heredia had a team-high 19 assists.
Kayla Chowning had 10 kills, 12 digs and two aces; Foust had six kills and one dig; Maddie Jones had 14 assists, one kill, one ace and two digs; Heredia also had four digs and two kills; Maddie Berry had two kills, six digs and one block; Mikki Reschman had seven digs and three aces; Ziggy Collins had one kill and three digs; and Kensi Chowning also had one kill.
While Sweetwater trails Wylie (5-0), Monahans (4-1) and Big Spring (3-2) at the halfway point of the dis-trict race, the Lady Mus-tangs have a leg up on both Snyder and last-place Mid-land Greenwood (0-5) for the final playoff berth.
Sweetwater hosts Mona-hans on Tuesday, then goes to Greenwood this Friday. The Lady Mustangs will not play Snyder again until the final match of the regular season on Oct. 29.
