SHS softball team begins play today at B-Spring tournament

After taking a break from tournament action Tuesday and losing at Merkel 9-5, the Sweetwater High School softball team began play this morning at a tournament held in Big Spring.
Sweetwater has pool play games today against Clyde, Lubbock Cooper and San Angelo Central before the tournament switches to bracket play Friday. Sweet-water’s first game is against Big Spring’s JV at 9:30 a.m., followed by a game against either Odessa or Midland Christian that afternoon.
Today’s pool play involves 30 teams playing on four fields. Sweetwater’s second game Friday will be played at 2 p.m. if it loses its opener and at 3:30 p.m. if it wins.
Sweetwater trailed Merkel 9-1 after a seven-run fourth inning, but scored four runs in the sixth inning to cut the deficit by over half. How-ever, they got no closer as their record fell to 6-3.
Sweetwater hurt itself with four errors that contributed heavily to Merkel’s big seven-run fourth inning.
Top hitters for the Lady Mustangs were Keyli Tur-ner, who had three singles; Kendra Crosson and Megan Holsey, who each stroked a pair of singles and had one RBI; Kinsey Browning with a double and two RBI; Angela Garza with a single and RBI; and Jackie Carey with a single. Garza, Carey, Turner, Browning and Hol-sey all scored runs.
Alicia Finn pitched the first 3 1/3 innings and Maty Montgomery hurled the final 2 2/3. Finn struck out one and allowed seven hits and Montgomery struck out two and allowed two hits.
