Lady ‘Stangs pull off amazing rally to go 2-0
Sweetwater turned a nine-point lead after three periods into a seven-point deficit with under two minutes to play. But then the Lady Mustangs pulled off an incredible comeback to stun San Angelo Lake View, 45-44, before a home crowd Friday to stay unbeaten this season at 2-0.Lake View took a 44-37 lead with 1:43 left, and still led 44-42 and had the ball with 1.4 seconds to play. But Sweetwater found a way to win it, thanks to a Maidens turnover and Kendra Cros-son’s 3-pointer off an inbounds pass from Suede Shirley at the buzzer.Lake View was cited for stepping over the line while trying to throw it in behind Sweetwater’s basket. After a timeout, Shirley took the ball at the same spot and fed Crosson, who swished her 3 from the right wing. The game-winning shot, and the ensuing celebration by Crosson and her teammates, capped a perfect first week for Sweetwater’s first-year head girls basketball coach Candice Wyatt.Another amazing fact, according to Wyatt, was that the winning play went just the way it was drawn up. She credited assistant Amy Clark for making the call. “I knew (Lake View) would come out on one of the (Crosson) twins and we got it to Kendra on the wing,” Wyatt said. “As soon as she shot it, I knew it was going in.”Sweetwater didn’t score until the game was almost five minutes old, yet trailed only three times until the fourth quarter. The Lady Mustangs led 6-4 after one period, then started to catch fire and ended the second quarter on a 12-3 run to lead 20-13 at intermission.Kinsey Browning’s trey increased the lead to 23-13, and the Lady Mustangs led 33-24 after three periods. But Lake View suddenly got red hot and obliterated that lead with a 20-4 run that included three treys, plus a conventional 3-point play, over the first 6:17 of the fourth period. Sweetwater didn’t score until Lake View had regained the lead with under five minutes left, but the Maidens went scoreless over the final 1:43.Sweetwater, which goes to Breckenridge for its next game Tuesday, was paced by Crosson, who finished with 10 points.Browning and Shelby Cason each had nine points, Alicia Finn six, Kelsi Cros-son five and Candice Her-nandez and Shirley three. Kelsi Crosson and Hernan-dez also hit 3-pointers for the Lady Mustangs.
