After suffering a defeat at Big Spring three days earlier that eliminated any hopes of reaching the playoffs, the Sweetwater volleyball team — which by many accounts has had an excellent season — showed off its talent while beating Midland Greenwood in three games at Mustang Gym.
After winning the first two games over the Rangerettes by scores of 25-15 and 25-17, Sweetwater (24-15 overall) staged a terrific rally to get a sweep with a 25-19 win in Game 3 that dropped Greenwood to 1-8 in district.
Sweetwater, playing in what may be the toughest district in Class 3A, is 4-5 and now faces first-place Wylie — the No. 1 team in the state and one of three ranked district teams — here on Tuesday.
A sensational 11-0 finish allowed the Lady Mustangs to overcome a 19-14 deficit in Game 3. Sweetwater had kills on five of the last six points, the last one by Shel-by Cason on match point, after trailing almost all the way up to that time.
Sweetwater also had to overcome early deficits in Game 1 and Game 2, espe-cially in the opener when Greenwood jumped out to an 8-3 lead before Sweet-water took control with a 10-1 run.
Cason had 11 kills, while Kelsi Crosson had 10 kills and 11 digs. Kathleen Camp-bell and Destiny Osteen had six and five kills, respective-ly, while Kendra Crosson had 13 digs and four kills. Setter Suede Shirley, in ad-dition to coming up with 29 assists, had three kills of her own. Campbell had three blocks and Cason and Kelsi Crosson two.
Providing solid back row defense were Angela Garza with seven digs and Janell Walker with five. Campbell, Cason and Shirley all had three digs and Osteen and Kayla Chowning two.
