Lady ‘Stangs routed at GW

January 8, 2014

GREENWOOD — After a 44-40 home win against Big Spring last Friday to jump-start district play, Sweetwa-ter’s Lady Mustangs lost to a red-hot Greenwood squad 66-18 on Tuesday.
Sweetwater never found its shooting eye against the Rangerettes, who are 2-0 in 4-3A play after Tuesday’s easy win while Sweetwater is 1-1 (6-9 overall).
With the win, Greenwood stayed in a first-place tie with Wylie, which crushed Monahans 77-21. Big Spring is now tied with Sweetwater at 1-1 after beating Snyder 58-46 on Tuesday.
The Rangerettes led all the way against Sweetwater, which will try to bounce back Friday when it goes to Monahans (0-2).
Sweetwater didn’t score until Greenwood had a 9-0 lead late in the first quar-ter. Cierra Knox and Taylor McPherson scored in the final minute of the period, but Sweetwater had just two more field goals after that and was just 4-of-45 from the field.
It was so bad that all seven of the team’s second-half points were on free throws. Led by Amanda Bell’s 27 points, the Rangerettes built their lead to as much as 52 points late in the contest until two free throws by Knox and McPherson, who was the Lady Mustangs’ top scorer with nine points. Knox had five points for Sweetwater, Maddie Jones three and Shaneese Brown one. The 18 points were a season-low total for the Lady Mustangs.
