Lady ‘Stangs start out with victories over two S-Angelo area schools

Sweetwater High School’s volleyball team won its first two matches of the year by defeating two San Angelo area schools, Grape Creek and Lake View, this past week before losing at Abilene Cooper on Thursday.Sweetwater swept both Grape Creek and Lake View by 3-0 scores, beating Grape Creek at home 25-19, 25-19, 25-13 this past Monday and winning at Lake View on Tuesday by scores of 25-18, 25-11 and 26-24.In the victory over Grape Creek, Mikeilah Foust and Kaitlyn Foster led the team with eight and six kills, respectively. Abby Garcia had five kills and five digs and Kensi Chowning had four kills. The Lady Mus-tangs’ setters, Sarah Valdez and Maddie Jones had 14 and 12 assists, respectively while Rhylee Meneses (a team-high eight digs) and Morgan Gomez (seven digs) led the defense. Also credited with kills were Maddie Berry with three, Katie Fox and Valdez with two and Maddie Jones and her sister, Lauren, with one apiece.Coach Liz Miller said that her team eliminated a lot of the hitting errors that had hurt Sweetwater in its opening scrimmage, when the Lady Mustangs played yet another San Angelo school — Central. “I told them it’s not always about crushing the ball. I saw improvement on that. We’re so much further along than we were at this time last year.”Against Lake View, the Lady Mustangs’ offensive attack was led by Chowning with seven kills. Gomez led the team with nine digs while Jones finished with eight assists and Valdez six. Also getting kills were Foust with three, Berry, Garcia and Lauren Jones with two and Gomez and Fox with one each. Also, Chowning finished the match with three blocks and three digs.In the team’s loss to Abi-lene Cooper, Chowning finished with eight kills while Lauren Jones and Foust had five kills, Garcia four and Foster three. Maddie Jones had 16 assists along with two kills, while Valdez had 10 assists. Gomez produced 12 digs.
