Recap of Sweetwater/Midland Greenwood varsity softball game held Tuesday

GREENWOOD — After dropping out of first place with a 10-0 loss to Snyder, Sweetwater’s softball team got back on track Tuesday by getting 17 hits and scoring 11 runs in the last two innings of a 13-3, run-rule win at Midland Greenwood.
Sweetwater (5-2) stayed a game behind Snyder, which improved to 6-1 in district with an 8-1 win over Big Spring (4-3). Sweetwater, which is closing in on a second straight playoff berth, will play host Friday to Big Spring at 5 p.m.
It was close for awhile as Greenwood took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, and led again 3-2 after three until Sweetwater (19-11 overall) took charge by scoring five runs in the fourth inning and six more in the fifth to claim its first run-rule victory in District 4-3A play.
Sweetwater was retired in order by Greenwood pitch-er Kassie Maddox in the top of the first, and she singled in a run in the bottom of the inning. But Maddox had to leave after a collision with a teammate one batter later, and Sweetwater took advantage by scoring all 13 of its runs off her replacements. Suede Shirley led the Lady Mustangs by going 4-for-4 with two RBI. Jerren Villa was 3-for-4 with three RBI. Maty Montgomery had two hits and three RBI. Kelsi Crosson and Alyssa Heredia had two RBI. Kelsi Crosson, Morgan Gomez and Kendra Crosson all had two hits. Montgomery, the winning pitcher, allowed five hits. Nine players scored runs and eight players had at least one hit for Sweetwater.
