BIG SPRING — After seeing most of its early five-run lead in Friday’s District 4-3A softball game disappear, Sweetwater took advantage of a Big Spring error in the sixth inning to score what proved to be the winning run in a 6-5 triumph.
The victory kept Sweet-water in a second-place tie with Snyder as it improved its district record to 2-1, a game behind Greenwood. Big Spring fell into a fourth-place tie with Monahans — which plays Sweetwater here Tuesday — at 1-2.
Sweetwater (16-10 overall) led 5-0 after two innings after scoring three runs in the first and two more off Big Spring pitcher Logan Yarbar in the second. But Big Spring used a four-run third to make it a contest, and threatened to either tie or take the lead in three of the last four innings before Sweetwater finally secured a hard-fought win.
The Lady Mustangs’ final run in the sixth came when Suede Shirley drew a one-out walk, went to second on a ground ball out and scored after Jerren Villa reached on an error. Big Spring then narrowed Sweetwater’s lead to 6-5 on a walk, stolen base and RBI single until pitcher Maty Montgomery retired the final two batters in the bottom of the seventh.
Kelsi Crosson and Shirley had RBI singles in the first inning and Villa’s ground ball scored the third run.
Megan Holsey, who doubled, scored on an outfield error to make it 4-0 in the second and Morgan Gomez later scored when Shirley reached on a fielder’s choice ground ball. Holsey and Shirley both scored twice and Holsey also had a pair of hits. Montgomery, Villa (fourth-inning double) and Keyli Turner also hit safely. On the mound, Montgomery scattered eight hits and struck out four.
