The Sweetwater volleyball team reached the 20-win plateau by defeating Miles in a three-game sweep here Tuesday night. But the real fun for the Lady Mustangs — the start of District 4-3A play — doesn’t begin until Saturday when state-ranked Monahans comes to Mustang Gym.
Against Miles, which is a state-ranked Class A team, Sweetwater won by scores of 25-17, 27-25, 25-20 to improve to 20-10 — its first 20-win season since the Lady Mustangs’ last playoff appearance four years ago.
Sweetwater was able to weather a rough spell half-way through its match that saw the Lady Mustangs blow a big lead in Game 2 and briefly trail 23-22.
After that, Sweetwater got back on track gradually by winning the second game and eventually prevailing in Game 3 to get a sweep.
Coach Liz Miller said her team is ready for Monahans. “We’re definitely better than the first time we played them,” she said, referring to a non-district loss when the teams met earlier this year.
Kendra Crosson finished with a team-high 10 kills against Miles, as well as seven digs and one service ace. In addition, Shelby Cason had nine kills and Kelsi Crosson and Kathleen Campbell eight.
Kelsi Crosson had a team-high 13 digs against Miles, while Suede Shirley finished with a team-high 29 kill assists plus three kills, eight digs and two aces. Kelsi Crosson had four aces while Campbell had two blocks and three digs and Cason had two digs, one ace and one assist. Mikki Reschman finished with six digs, four assists and one service ace.
Janell Walker finished with five digs and Kayla Chowning three; Taylor McPherson had two kills and one block; Destiny Osteen had one kill and one block; and Larissa Locklar had one dig and one block; and Angela Garza also had one dig.
