Lady ‘Stangs visit Merkel after pair of wins at SW tournament

Lady Mustang softball prepares for bout against Merkel today at 4 p.m.

Sweetwater High School’s softball team is back on the road for a game at Merkel at 4 p.m. today.
Sweetwater is 6-2 overall after winning two of its three games at Sweetwater’s tournament. The Lady Mus-tangs began their event with a 13-2 win over Perryton this past Friday at the Jerry Collins Complex, lost to Clyde 8-5 later that day and beat Colorado City 6-3 in their final game Saturday.
The Lady Mustangs’ top hitters against Perryton were Claire Williams with three singles and a double; Alicia Finn with a home run and double; Kendra Crosson with a double and single; Kelsi Crosson with three singles; Suede Shirley and Keyli Turner with two singles; and Kinsey Brown-ing, Jackie Carey and Megan Holsey with singles. Kelsi Crosson had three RBI and Finn and Williams both scored three runs. Pitcher Maty Montgomery allowed five hits, walked none and struck out six for a complete game win. Also scoring runs were Shirley (twice), Browning, Holsey, Turner, Carey and Kendra Crosson.
Also geting an RBI for Sweetwater were Holsey, Shirley, Kendra Crosson, Turner, Carey, Williams and Finn and Williams was named the team’s defensive player of the game.
Against Clyde, Shirley had two hits including one double, and Kendra Crosson and Williams also doubled, while Kelsi Crosson had two singles and Finn one. Shirley finished with three RBI, and Finn and Williams also had RBI in the game, but Sweetwater hurt itself with five errors. Montgo-ery suffered the loss despite allowing just four hits.
Sweetwater’s top hitter against Colorado City was Kendra Crosson with a home run and two singles, while Finn got the pitching win as she struck out three, walked none and gave up just four hits. Kendra Crosson had three hits and Shirley, Turner, Browning, Kelsi Crosson, Williams and Loni Mendez one. Browning and Turner doubled. Kendra Crosson had three RBI and also scored two runs, while Turner, Williams and Shirley also had RBI. Sweetwater broke a 3-3 tie with three runs in the fifth inning.
Hawley beat Eula, 6-5, to win the tournament championship on Saturday while Merkel blanked Post 15-0 to win the consolation title.
