After a thrilling start to the week that saw Sweetwaterâs softball team clinch its first playoff berth in 16 years, the Lady Mustangs hosted first-place Brownwood Friday and pounded out 10 hits off ace pitcher Sydney Laws â including solo homers by Suede Shirley and Claire Williams. It was not enough, however, as Brownwood (7-0) won, 15-3, to clinch its third straight district title.
With the loss, Sweetwa-ter â which is 4-3 in district â fell into a second-place tie with Snyder. The teams will meet in a season-ending showdown on Tuesday to decide the districtâs No. 2 and No. 3 playoff seeds.
Sweetwater entered Fri-dayâs home game on a roll after consecutive wins on the road over Snyder, Big Spring and Wylie. But the Lady âStangs couldnât stay with Brownwood, which has now won an amazing 25 consecutive district games.
Shirleyâs first-inning blast allowed Sweetwater to tie the game briefly at 1. Williamsâ homer in the fifth helped the Lady Mustangs keep Brownwood from win-ning by the 10-run rule.
In addition to her pitch-ing, Laws hit a homer for Brownwood as did Shelbi Winstead. And that was just part of the damage as the visitors had 17 hits, with five of them for extra bases.
Sweetwaterâs only other run against the Lady Lions came in the second inning, when Shirley singled to score Alicia Finn. Her hit, the third of the inning, narrowed the lead to 5-2, and a walk loaded the bases. But Sweetwater never got any closer than that. Williams finished with three hits to lead the offensive attack, and seven players had at least one hit.
