Lady Mustangs are handed first defeat

ABILENE — After three straight wins to start the season, the Sweetwater girls basketball team was unable to find the magic at Abilene High on Friday and suffered its first loss of the year, 53-44.
Class 5A Abilene (2-1) built a 10-6 lead after one quarter and increased the lead to seven, 27-20, at halftime. It was 37-28 after three periods of play.
Although the score was relatively close, Sweetwa-ter coach Candice Wyatt said her team was hurt by poor shooting, turnovers and losing two of their players to fouls in the fourth quarter.
Kendra Crosson led the team with 13 points and also had eight rebounds. Alicia Finn had 10 points, six rebounds and three steals and Suede Shirley had seven points, four assists and three steals.Kinsey Browning contributed six points, Candice Hernandez five and Hay-ley Brownlow and Kelsi Crosson two. Hernandez also had five rebounds for Sweetwater, which returns home to face San Angelo Central on Monday and Abilene Cooper Tuesday.
