Exactly one week after winning a five-game match at Miles, Sweetwater went the distance again Tuesday vs. Levelland at home only to lose 3-2 (25-18, 25-23, 13-25, 24-26 and 14-16) in their final tuneup for the start of District 4-3A play that begins Saturday.
Sweetwater, now 9-15, surrendered a 13-7 lead in the fifth and decisive game after giving up a 2-0 overall lead by losing the third and fourth games.
Levelland tied it 13-13 in Game 5 and took its first lead, 15-14, before getting the match winner on a successful kill shot at the net after Sweetwater had served for the match earlier with a 14-13 advantage.
Sweetwater also led 23-20 in Game 4 after scoring on a service ace from Kensi Chowning that put the Lady Mustangs two points from a victory, then fought off one game point to tie it at 24 before giving up the last two points to Levelland.
Sweetwater begins district at Monahans this Saturday, then comes home Tuesday to face Wylie.
â€śWeâ€™ve got to have more offense and we need more confidence,â€ť said head coach Liz Miller. â€śBut they work hard and try hard, and tonight they did the best they could do, so thatâ€™s all that you can ask.
â€śIn the third game we got in a bit of a funk, but pulled ourselves up and fought to the end. We almost tried too hard, but Iâ€™d rather be that way than to give up and throw in the towel.â€ť
Shaneese Brown had a team-high nine kills and Kayla Chowning and Ziggy Collins had eight kills. Mor-gan Gomez had 30 digs, Mikki Reschman 18 and Kayla Chowning 17. Kensi Chowning had six kills. Aly Heredia and Maddie Jones had 11 digs and Heredia led the team with 21 assists.
