The Sweetwater girls bas-ketball team struggled early against Snyder in the teams’ District 5-3A game Tuesday at Mustangs, then lost two key starters to fouls in the fourth quarter after building a 12-point lead.
But the Lady Mustangs persevered to get their first win in district play, 49-43, over the Lady Tigers.
Sweetwater (1-4, 15-15) found itself trailing 11-2 and 13-4 in the first quarter un-til finally getting untracked.
Kendra Crosson’s basket gave the Lady Mustangs their first lead, 18-17, with 3:19 left before halftime.
Snyder (1-4, 12-13) twice was able to regain the lead before Crosson scored to tie it 22-all at halftime. That started an 11-0 run — capped by Kinsey Browning’s three-pointer — that gave Sweet-water a 31-22 lead.
But after going up by 12, 43-31, Sweetwater lost Crosson and Alicia Finn to fouls within less than a minute of each other in the fourth quarter. Snyder took advantage, cutting the lead to five (43-38) with 2:59 left. But a free throw by Candice Hernandez and a basket by Browning made it 46-38 with 2:05 to play, and Sweetwater held on with Browning hitting two free throws and Suede Shirley one to secure the victory.
Kendra Crosson finished with 17 points to pace the Lady Mustangs, who don’t play again until going to Big Spring next Tuesday. Browning had nine, Shirley eight, Finn five, Hernandez and Kelsi Crosson four and Janell Walker two.
