After being idle for the previous eight days, Sweet-water High School’s softball team finally returned to ac-tion Monday at the Jerry Collins Complex.
And in what was their last game before the start of dis-trict play, the Lady Mus-tangs shook off the rust to outscore Midland Christian, 14-12, while improving to 9-6 this season.
Sweetwater trailed only once (1-0 after a half inning) against Midland Christian, but the visitors kept things interesting until the end.
Sweetwater scored four runs in each of the first two innings to build an 8-3 lead only to see Midland Chris-tian — also known as the Lady Mustangs — tie it 8-8 in the top of the fourth.
Sweetwater then re-estab-ished leads of 11-8 and 14-10 going into the top of the seventh, but Midland Christian used a two-run double to pull within 14-12 and had runners at the cor-ners and the go-ahead run at the plate following a two-out single.
But Annaliese Espinoza, who pitched the last two innings in relief of starter Maddie Berry, struck out Midland Christian’s next batter on a 2-2 pitch to end the game.
Sweetwater won on Mon-day despite being out-hit 11-8 by Midland Christian and committing six errors.
Cierra Knox had three of Sweetwater’s hits, including a pair of doubles, and three RBI while also scoring four runs to pace the Lady Mus-tangs’ offense.
Berry and Abby Garcia each had two hits and two RBI, with Berry collecting a double, and Megan Holsey had the other hit as well as an RBI. Garcia and Morgan Gomez each scored three runs and Savanna Hall two, while Kat Montoya had two RBI. Montoya and Shaneese Brown also scored runs for the Lady Mustangs, who will begin District 4-3A play at 5 p.m. Friday when they travel to Snyder.
Sweetwater also used its speed to advantage on Mon-day as Garcia, Knox and Gomez all stole three bases while Brown and Hall had two stolen bases each.
