Lady Mustangs rebound to claim easy road victory

MONAHANS — Three days after a humbling road loss to Greenwood, Sweet-water’s Lady Mustangs are back on track.
Sweetwater easily won at Monahans, 57-38, on Friday, improving to 2-1 in District 4-3A and 7-9 for the season.
Kayla Chowning and Sha-neese Brown led the Lady Mustangs with 18 and 15 points, respectively. Sweet-water got off to a great start, jumping out to a 24-6 lead after one quarter and lead-ing by double digits the rest of the way. The win, cou-pled with first-place Wylie’s 44-37 win over Big Spring, allowed Sweetwater to grab undisputed third place in the district standings.
Greenwood (3-0), which defeated Sweetwater 66-18 on Tuesday, also knocked off Snyder 60-39 on Friday.
Sweetwater, a 44-40 win-ner over Big Spring in its 4-3A opener, hosts Snyder (0-3) on Tuesday and ent-ertains Wylie on Friday.
Sweetwater also got seven points from Cierra Knox off the bench in its win over Monahans. Maddie Jones and Taylor McPherson had six, Lexi Castillo three and Abby McPherson two.
Sweetwater hit on five 3-pointers, including two by Chowning and one each by Castillo, Brown and Knox.
Monahans (0-3, 3-11 for the season), which is tied with Snyder for last place, was paced Friday by McKylie Irons, who scored 13 points.
