The Sweetwater girls’ up-and-down basketball season is back on the upswing, and it couldn’t come at a better time. A 55-25 blowout win against Roby here Tuesday was the eighth in the past 11 games as the Lady Mus-tangs ended the non-dis-trict portion of their sched-ule with a 14-11 record.
“I think we’ve stepped our game up. Our last three games have been the best games of our season,” said Sweetwater head coach Candice Wyatt, whose team began 2012 with a bang after finishing second at the Breckenridge tournament last week, losing the title game to Tolar by one point.
Against Roby, the Lady Mustangs dominated from start to finish. After jumping out to a 16-3 lead after one period, Sweetwater led 32-8 at halftime and 41-19 after three quarters. Suede Shirley had 14 points and Kinsey Browning nine, with both hitting a pair of three-pointers, to pace the win.
“We finally came out and played to our potential,” said Wyatt, whose team starts district play at Snyder next Tuesday. “I was impressed by our half-court defense. It has come a long way since the start of the season.”
That was evident on Tues-day, as Sweetwater had already built a commanding 15-point lead (18-3) before Roby hit its first field goal early in the second quarter.
Sweetwater twice led by as many as 33 points in the fourth quarter, and nearly everyone got into the act as 10 players scored. Kendra Crosson had eight, Shelby Cason and Alicia Finn six and Hayley Brownlow five, including a three-pointer. Candice Hernandez, Elise Lawrence and Kathleen Campbell scored two points and Janell Walker one.
The Sweetwater JV girls (12-3) also won, 46-16, in their game with Roby. Sha-neese Brown (12 points) led the win. Claire Williams had 10, Taylor McPherson seven, Larissa Locklar six, Maddie Jones five, Mikki Reschman three, Sydney Vanderbilt two and Abbie McPherson one. No fresh-man girls game was played on Tuesday.
