Down 6-2 with just six outs left, Sweetwater rallied to tie Big Spring 6-6 in the teams’ 4-3A softball game here Friday when the Lady Mustangs scored four runs in the sixth inning. Sweet-water collected six of its 11 hits for the game and sent 10 batters to the plate.
Big Spring, however, had an answer.
The visiting Lady Steers came back to score twice in their half of the seventh to defeat Sweetwater, 8-6, and improve to 1-2 in district.
Big Spring twice held four-run leads in the game over Sweetwater (0-3), the first time at 5-1 after a four-run third inning. Big Spring used three hits and four Sweetwater errors to build its early cushion, and added a run in the fourth.
Sweetwater gave its fans hope, however, with its big sixth-inning rally after not doing a lot up to that point.
Sweetwater loaded the bases on singles by Savanna Hall, Abby Garcia and Rebecca Gonzales, and cut it to 6-4 on Maddie Berry’s two-run single. Sweetwater cut it to 6-5 when Megan Holsey reached on an error that scored Gonzales, and Morgan Gomez then singled to score Shaneese Brown, who was running for Berry.
But Big Spring used two hits, a sacrifice fly and out-field error to regain the lead, this time for good, as the Lady Steers pulled out of a tie for last place with the Lady Mustangs (9-9 for the season). Berry took the pitching loss for Sweetwater, though she allowed just two earned runs and struck out five while scattering 10 hits in going the distance.
