Sweetwater Lady Mustangs softball recap

ABILENE — After scor-ing a season-high 15 runs in a key win at Big Spring three days earlier, Sweet-water again brought out the big lumber on Friday when it traveled to Wylie for the last of four straight road games in District 5-3A softball play.
And after a 10-6 win, the Lady Mustangs are on the verge of making history as just the second team to advance to postseason play since Sweetwater began playing UIL softball.
Sweetwater (4-2 district, 14-7 overall), which began the day in second place, is still a game ahead of third-place Snyder (3-3). Wylie dropped to 1-4 in district and must win its last three games to have any chance of making the postseason.
A Snyder win over Wylie on Tuesday assures Sweetwater a playoff spot, even though the team will be enjoying time off before hosting Brownwood (5-0) on Friday.
Against Wylie, Sweetwa-ter went ahead to stay, 5-4, with four runs in the top of the third to wipe out a 4-1 deficit. But the Lady Mus-tangs still led only 7-6 until scoring three runs in the seventh to give themselves more breathing room. The last two runs came on a two-out single by Claire Williams and Suede Shirley also had an RBI single.
Sweetwater led 1-0 after a Williams single and an RBI double by Kendra Crosson. The third-inning rally featured an RBI double by Kinsey Browning, an RBI single by Shirley and finally a two-RBI double by Keyli Turner that gave Sweetwater a 5-4 lead.
The Lady Mustangs in-creased their lead to 6-4 in the fourth inning when Shirley, after striking out, reached on a passed ball and catcher’s throwing error that scored Kelsi Crosson from second base. Shirley scored on a wild pitch in the sixth for a 7-5 lead, but Wylie came back to cut the lead to a run by scoring in the bottom of the inning.
Sweetwater, which has totalled 25 runs in its last two games, was led by Williams and Shirley with three hits each and six others had at least one hit. Williams had the team’s other double. Shirley, Jac-kie Carey, Alicia Finn and Browning all scored twice. Sweetwater pitcher Maty Montgomery threw a complete game, scattering 12 hits to get the victory.
