A year ago, the Sweetwater volleyball team opened its season with a straight-set loss against Seminole at home. But on Tuesday, Sweetwater hosted Seminole again and the result took a 180-degree turn.
Leading almost all the way, the Lady Mustangs swept the match by scores of 25-20, 25-18, 25-12.
Except for some struggles at the end of the first game and early in the second, Sweetwater was in control against Seminole while getting strong individual performances from several players.
The Crosson twins, Kelsi and Kendra, had 14 and 13 kills, respectively. However, nine of the Lady Mus-tangs’ 10 players had at least one kill. Not only that, but eight players recorded digs, seven had aces and six had at least one block. Kinsey Browning and Suede Shirley led Sweetwater with seven digs each, while setters Alicia Finn and Shirley came up with 16 and 14 assists, respectively, and Kathleen Campbell had a team-high five blocks.
Sweetwater also finished with a flourish, scoring 11 of the last 13 points. “I’m just impressed with all of the girls,” said head coach Liz Miller. “They’ve worked their tails off for the last week-and-a-half. Everybody did well tonight and I’m proud of them. It was fun.”
The sub-varsity teams also won on Tuesday. The JV swept Seminole 25-20, 25-22 and the freshmen won their match with Seminole in three sets, 25-10, 24-26 and 15-2.
All three teams will be playing in tournaments beginning Friday.
The varsity will be in a two-day tournament in Abilene, while the freshmen and JV will play a one-day event in Albany. All three teams travel to Grape Creek on Monday.
