Lady Stangs back on road after placing 2nd at Canyon

The Sweetwater varsity volleyball team’s extended road swing — which contin-ues today at Seminole with a dual match against both Frenship and Seminole — has been productive so far.
The Lady Mustangs are 6-4 overall after defeating 5A Abilene Cooper 25-12, 25-22, 25-20 in Abilene on Thursday and then placing second in the Silver Bracket of Canyon Randall’s two-day tournament.
Suede Shirley had 16 digs and 14 assists against Cooper plus two kills and two aces. Kelsi Crosson had 12 digs, seven kills, five aces and two assists. Kendra Crosson had 10 kills and four digs, and Kathleen Campbell had five kills, five blocks and three digs. Shelby Cason had four blocks and two digs. Kayla Chowning, Angela Garza, Mikki Reschman and Janell Walker had three digs.Des-tiny Osteen had two kills and two digs. Taylor McPherson and Larissa Locklar had one kill and one dig apiece.
At Canyon Randall, the team won one of three pool matches, but in bracket play won matches over Dalhart (25-16, 25-20) and Caprock (28-26, 25-17) before losing to Lubbock Cooper 17-25, 24-26 in the title match.
Sweetwater lost to El Paso Eastlake and Randall in its first two pool matches before beating Highland Park. The team played without Kendra Crosson, who was injured against Cooper and did not play in the tournament. Kelsi Crosson had a team-high 34 kills and Campbell 31 in six tourna-ment matches, while Shirley finished the two-day event with 99 assists, including 25 vs. Dalhart and Highland Park. Kelsi Crosson had 12 digs vs. Dalhart, 10 against El Paso Eastlake and nine against Highland Park, while Campbell had nine kills and six blocks and Cason 10 kills against Highland Park. Chowning had six digs against El Paso, Reschman had six digs vs. Dalhart and Caprock and Garza had five digs against Highland Park.
