BROWNWOOD — After getting eight days off following its come-from-behind 8-6 win over Wylie here on March 20, Sweetwater’s softball team came out blazing with three early runs at Brownwood and a 3-0 lead after 1 1/2 innings Wednesday. A double by Claire Williams began the rally, and Kendra Crosson was hit by a pitch before Kelsi Crosson doubled both of them home. After a strikeout, Maty Montgomery then reached on an error to score courtesy runner Angela Garza and give Sweetwater a 3-0 advantage over the Lady Lions and their ace pitcher, Sydney Laws.
But after that auspicious start, Sweetwater did little else against Laws, who set-tled down on the mound and got plenty of offensive help from her teammates as Brownwood defeated the Lady Mustangs 8-3.
Brownwood, the two-time defending champion, won its 21st straight district game while improving to 3-0 in district and 13-4 overall. Sweetwater fell to 1-2 in district and 11-7 for the season. However, the Lady Mustangs are still tied for third place in district with Wylie, which got its first district victory, 12-1, on Wednesday over Big Spring (1-3), which fell to last.
Sweetwater will now try to rebound quickly when it goes to Snyder (2-1) at 6:30 p.m. Friday.
Montgomery — who threw a complete game for Sweetwater and allowed nine hits — still enjoyed a 3-2 lead when she took the mound for third inning.
However, Brownwood pushed across four runs on three hits and two Sweet-water errors as the Lady Lions grabbed a 6-3 lead, and they added two runs in the fifth to close out the scoring. Sweetwater ended the game with four hits.
