Lady Stangs drop 5-3A opener, 56-47

January 11, 2012

SNYDER — Sweetwater’s District 5-3A girls opener at Snyder got off to a rough start on Tuesday, as the host Lady Tigers jumped out to a 21-13 lead after one quarter and never looked back en route to a 56-47 win.
“We just didn’t really show up and play,” said coach Candice Wyatt, whose team (14-12 overall) came into the contest having won eight of its last 11 games to end non-district play but could never seem to get un-tracked on Tuesday. Snyder (12-10, 1-1 in district) led 31-21 at halftime and 44-30 at the end of three periods before holding off a fourth-quarter rally that cut the final deficit to nine points.
Sweetwater’s comeback effort was hurt by poor shooting (32 percent) plus 24 turnovers, though the team did rally within five points in the fourth quarter. The Lady Mustangs managed to hit just 2 of 15 from 3-point range. Alicia Finn led Sweetwater with 10 points and 10 rebounds, while Candice Hernandez and Suede Shirley had nine points and Kendra Crosson eight. Kinsey Browning had five points and Kelsi Cros-son, Hayley Brownlow and Kathleen Campbell two. In addition, Kendra Crosson had seven rebounds.
Sweetwater was coming off a bye while the rest of the 5-3A teams began play on Friday. Snyder took control by scoring the last eight points of the first quarter to break a 13-13 tie and led by as much as 17, 48-31, in the final quarter.
Sweetwater staged a desperate rally at the point, going on a 12-0 run to cut the lead to 48-43, but that would be as close as the Lady Mustangs got.
Sweetwater did shoot its free throws well, making 13 of 17 to Snyder’s 17 of 22. Jentri Driggers and Zoi Malone each scored 15 points to pace Snyder, while Kandyce Freeman had 10.
It doesn’t get any easier for Sweetwater, which will host Wylie — ranked No. 1 in Class 3A — this Friday followed by games against Big Spring and No. 7-ranked Brownwood next week.
