BIG SPRING — Sweet-water’s volleyball team has made big strides this sea-son. But the Lady Mustangs were unable to pull off what would have been a big upset in Friday’s district opener at Big Spring.
The Lady Steers, ranked No. 9 in the latest Texas Girls Coaches Association Class 3A poll, swept past the Lady Mustangs by scores of 25-20, 25-21 and 25-15.
Sweetwater is now 16-14 overall, while Big Spring — one of two state-ranked teams in the district along with No. 10 Abilene Wylie — is 25-9 for the season. The Lady Mustangs travel to Andrews for a non-district match this Tuesday before resuming District 5-3A play at Brownwood on Sept. 30. The next home match for Sweetwater will be against Snyder on Oct. 4.
In Friday’s match, Kelsi Crosson paced Sweetwater with seven kills, one ace and one block and Kathleen Campbell had six kills and two blocks.
Kendra Crosson, Kelsi’s twin sister, had five kills and one ace. Alicia Finn had three kills, three aces, three blocks and nine kill assists while Suede Shirley paced Sweetwater with 12 assists and had two aces.
Kinsey Browning led the Lady Mustangs with four digs, and Larissa Locklar had one block and one kill.
