Recap of Lady Mustangs' volleyball season opener

Sweetwater High School’s volleyball team faced an early gut-check in its season-opening match here Monday, and passed it with flying colors with a come-from-behind 3-2 win over San Angelo Grape Creek.
The Lady Mustangs play two more matches tonight at home against Seminole and Water Valley, with the first match at 6:15 p.m.
Water Valley is the defending Class 1A state champion and after graduating just one player from that team, the Lady Wildcats enter this season ranked No. 1, while Seminole is also considered a playoff-caliber squad.
Sweetwater head coach Liz Miller apparently got the answer she was looking for when, with her team trailing Grape Creek 2-1, she asked the players “Can we do it?” The Lady Mustangs responded with a 25-17 win to force a fifth and decisive game, then ended the match with a 15-8 victory.
“After the two scrimmages this weekend, our goal was to play well for 40 min-utes, not just 20,” Miller said. “We’ve got to learn how to find ways to score.”
After winning 25-19 in its first game, Sweetwater lost to Grape Creek 25-23 and 25-22 to fall behind 2-1. But the Sweetwater came back to score the first five points of its fourth game and never trailed again in the match.
Sweetwater also won both sub-varsity matches as the JV prevailed 25-20, 25-19 and the freshmen won by scores of 25-16, 25-16.
Sweetwater’s varsity had several top individual per-formances against Grape Creek. Setter Suede Shirley assisted on 38 kills, led by Kendra Crosson’s 17.
Kelsi Crosson had 13 kills and a team-high 11 digs, while Shelby Cason also reached double figures in kills with 12.
Kathleen Campbell and Larissa Locklar had seven kills, and Campbell led the team with six blocks. Shirley also had four service aces.
Kendra Crosson and Janell Walker had nine digs, Cason eight, Shirley seven, Taylor McPherson four and Angela Garza and Mikki Reschman three apiece.
