The Sweetwater volleyball team is back over .500 for the 2011 season after a 3-1 victory at Seminole on Tuesday after losing in four games to Midland Lee to begin the dual match.
Kendra Crosson had 15 kills, Kelsi Crosson seven, Shelby Cason and Alicia Finn four and Larissa Locklar and Taylor McPherson three against Seminole. Suede Shirley had 15 assists and Finn 10 for Sweetwater (5-4). Against Midland Lee, Cason had eight kills while Kendra Crosson had seven kills, Kathleen Campbell five and Kelsi Crosson and Finn three apiece.
Sweetwater lost its first game to Seminole 15-25, but rebounded sharply to win its last three games by scores of 25-15, 25-16 and 25-21. Against Midland Lee, Sweetwater lost its first game 12-25 before winning 25-18, but then lost its last two games of the match.
The Lady Mustangs, who return to competition when they play at a San Angelo tournament on Friday and Saturday, needed all five games to beat Grape Creek 13-25, 25-20, 25-18, 26-28, 15-6 in a single match on Monday. A number of players had outstanding efforts against Grape Creek. Cason led in kills with 22, while Kendra Crosson had 16, Locklar five and Campbell four. Other leaders included Campbell with seven blocks, Kinsey Browning with nine digs and five aces and Shirley with 29 assists.
Sweetwater also played at a tournament in Abilene and finished with two wins in its five matches, both coming in pool play when the Lady Mustangs defeated Fort Worth Brewer and San Angelo Lake View before losing to Abilene High.
Sweetwater’s scores against Brewer were 13-25, 25-8, 26-24 while against Lake View, Sweetwater won 25-20, 25-23 before losing to Abilene High 9-25, 20-25. In bracket play, Sweetwater lost to Lubbock Coronado 3-25, 12-25 and to Abilene Cooper 12-25, 16-25 on the final day of the tourney.
Kelsi Crosson had 13 kills, Kendra Crosson nine kills and 17 digs, Campbell nine kills and four blocks and Finn seven kills and 24 assists against Fort Worth Brewer. Browning finished with 12 digs and Allie Zavaleta nine, while Shirley had 12 assists and four digs.
In Sweetwater’s match against San Angelo Lake View, Shirley had 10 assists and eight digs while Finn had four kills, six assists, seven digs and five blocks and Zavaleta and Browning had seven and six digs, respectively. Kendra Crosson also had four kills while Campbell had a team-high five blocks plus three digs. Kelsi Crosson had two kills, two digs and two blocks and Cason had two kills, four digs and two blocks while Taylor McPherson had two digs and two assists.
