After relatively-easy wins in their first two games against Sterling City, the, Sweetwater volleyball team was almost pushed to the limit here Tuesday.
The visiting Lady Eagles won the third game 25-19, then ran off three consecu-tive points to take a 24-21 lead in Game 4.
But in a remarkable turn-around, Sweetwater scored the next five points to close out Sterling City and win the match at Mustang Gym.
The Lady Mustangs (3-7) ended with a flourish by getting a service ace from Kensi Chowning, one of two freshmen on a very young team that has just two returning lettermen from 2012.
â€śWeâ€™re coming together as a team,â€ť said coach Liz Miller. â€śWeâ€™re still learning how to convert and we need more offense, but things are beginning to get better.â€ť
Kayla Chowning, Kensiâ€™s older sister, had a team-high 11 kills while Morgan Gomez came up with 23 digs against Sterling City.
Shaneese Brown had nine kills and Kensi Chowning six. Kayla Chowning, Kensi Chowning, Maddie Jones and Mikki Reschman had seven digs. Aly Heredia had 18 assists and five digs; Jones also had 11 assists and four aces; Mikeilah Foust had three kills and three blocks; Maddie Berry had two kills, three digs and two assists; and Ziggy Collins had two kills. Heredia and Gomez also had kills for the Lady Mustangs, who play at San Angelo Centralâ€™s tournament beginning Friday. The team doesnâ€™t play at home again until Sept. 10.
