Lady Steers subdue SW

October 28, 2013

With a chance to clinch a playoff spot, Sweetwater’s volleyball team gave an all-out effort against state-ranked Big Spring on Fri-day at Mustang Gym.
But after leading for most of Game 1, and all but a few points of the first half of Game 2, the Lady Mustangs were unable to pull off the upset as the Lady Steers rallied to win in three games by scores of 25-21, 25-22 and 25-18.
Sweetwater, which fell to 3-6 in District 4-3A play and 12-21 overall, can still wrap up a playoff spot by beating Snyder (2-7) on Tuesday at Mustang Gym in its final match of the season. But if Snyder wins, it will force an additional match between the teams to decide who will get the No. 4 and final spot from District 4-3A.
Sweetwater held several small leads in Game 1 over Big Spring (6-3), which has already clinched a playoff berth along with first-place Wylie (9-0) and second-place Monahans (8-1).
But Big Spring overcame a 20-17 deficit with an 8-1 run to give the Lady Steers an opening win.
In Game 2, Sweetwater fought back from a 20-13 deficit to tie the game with seven straight points, but could never regain the lead it had in the early part of the set as Big Spring held on for a three-point win.
The Lady Steers asserted themselves in the third and final game, however, over-coming an early 3-2 Sweet-water lead to close out the 3-0 match sweep.
Shaneese Brown and Kay-la Chowning had seven kills each to lead Sweetwater’s offense. Morgan Gomez had 16 digs to lead the defense and Chowning was close behind with 13. Maddie Jones and Aly Heredia had 12 and 10 assists, respectively.
Also getting kills were Mikeilah Foust (four), Kensi Chowning (three), Maddie Berry (two) and Jones (one). Also getting digs were Mikki Reschman (nine), Heredia (four), Berry (three), Brown (three), Ziggy Collins (three), Jones (three) and Kensi Chowning (one).
