Lamar Street construction to begin this week in SW

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) will begin a major project to reconstruct 1.3 miles of Lamar Street (US Highway 70-Business) in Sweetwater this week. The project will completely rehabilitate Lamar Street, which is one of the community’s major streets, from I-20 to Avenue B by rebuilding the road base, laying new asphalt and building concrete intersections to improve drainage. The project also includes new sidewalks, curbs, gutters, retaining walls and upgraded signals.Work will begin this week when crews will close the street’s two northbound lanes and channel traffic to one lane in each direction on the west side of the road for part of Lamar Street. To facilitate traffic flow, most work will be completed on one half of the road at a time, starting with intersection work on the east side of the road. The first intersections to be reconstructed will be East Texas and East Arkansas Avenues.Plans also call for sidewalk, curb and other work to be completed as much as possible before making major traffic switches to minimize disruptions to drivers, businesses and residents. The work will be phased to accommodate businesses and residences, as well as school and special event schedules, as much as possible. Work will not take place in front of the school until classes are dismissed next summer. The project is expected to be complete by spring of 2015. Throughout construction, drivers and pedestrians are urged to use extreme caution in the work zone.J.H. Strain and Sons, Inc. of Tye will complete the project for about $6.5 million.
