Sweetwater opened its 2014 powerlifting season on Thursday by placing first in the boys and girls divisions at Big Springâ€™s meet.
The Sweetwater boys had 36 points, barely edging out second-place Coahomaâ€™s 35 and Big Springâ€™s 32, who both had more individual weight class winners than Sweetwater.
Meanwhile, the Sweet-water girls scored 46 points to easily beat out Lamesa, which placed a distant second with just 22 points.
Austin Marlett was the only weight class winner for Sweetwaterâ€™s boys, lifting 1,055 pounds in the 181-pound class.
However, seven other Sweetwater athletes had top-three finishes. Placing second for Sweetwater were Colter Reed in the 123-pound class (620) and Andrew Davis in the superheavyweight class (1,105), while placing third were Nathan Browning in the 123-pound class (545), Branson Guelker in the 165-pound class (755), Junior Lawhon in the 181-pound class (925), Zach Garcia in the 198-pound class (980) and Raymond Delgado in the 220-pound class (845). Also, Dylan Jimenez was fourth in the 198-pound class (950), Cory Mendez was fourth in the 242-pound class (1,085) and Steven Le was fifth in the 165-pound class (600). Also, Davis had the second best bench press average (181.51) among athletes in the 181 through superheavyweight classes.
Roscoeâ€™s Ray Bohall was fourth in the 181-pound class (725 pounds).
The Sweetwater girlsâ€™ five winners were Valeria Zavaleta in the 123-pound weight class (530), Dana Hohn in the 165-pound class (730), Zanesha Collins in the 181-pound class (635), Naomi Gonzales in the 220-pound class (620) and Eliza Delgado in the 220-pound-and-above class (695). Placing second were Kristi Ward in the 148-pound class (610) and Shaina Wiltse in the 220-pound class (575). Rebecca Gonzales was fifth in the 165-pound class (460). Roscoeâ€™s Ashley Lara won the 198-pound class (540). Hohn had the best Malone lift average (548.96), bench press average (105.28) and dead lift average (233.12) and second best squat average (210.56) in the 165-and-above divisions. Collins was third in Malone lift average (438.02) squat average (165.55) and dead lift average (193.14). Ward was third in bench press average (100.65) in the 97-148-pound weight divisions.
