Loboettes defeat S’water

March 18, 2011

Sweetwater softball

In its final game before today’s District 5-3A opener at Big Spring, Sweetwater’s softball team showed some resiliency here on Thursday by coming all the way back from a five-run deficit to tie Levelland, 5-5, at the Jerry Collins Complex.
But the Loboettes then put together the winning rally with three runs in their half of the sixth inning to break the deadlock and held on for an 8-5 victory over the Lady Mustangs.
Sweetwater — which plays its first two district games on the road before starting a six-game homestand a week from today — fell behind 5-0 until scoring four runs in the fourth inning and one in the fifth to pull even with Levelland, only to see its momentum slip away in the final two innings. The four-run fourth was highlighted by Keyli Turner’s two-run double that scored Alicia Finn and Kendra Crosson, who both singled. Jerren Villa’s fly ball scored Taylor McKoy, who also singled, to cut Levelland’s lead to 5-4.
Finn and Crosson walked and Kinsey Browning singled to load the bases in the fifth, and Turner’s single scored Finn to tie the game and reload the bases. But Levelland ended the rally with a strikeout, and the Sweetwater was retired in order the last two innings.
Finn pitched the first three innings, with McKoy going the final four.
