Local city, school elections held this weekend
City and school elections were held on Saturday, as voters headed to the polls in several communities throughout the Big Country.With a total of 205 votes, Greg Wortham will continue to serve as the Mayor of Sweetwater. Wortham garnered 174 votes, while his opponent Frankie SoRelle obtained 31 votes.Precinct 1 Commissioner Larry May received 61 votes, while Precinct 3 Commissioner Ricky Castro obtained 19 votes. Both men will continue to serve on the Sweetwater City Commission as a result.In accordance with government election codes, there were no qualified write-in candidates for the election. The results will be official after being canvassed by the City Commission during Tuesday morning's meeting.In Colorado City, voters elected Jim Baum as their mayor as he garnered 403 votes. His opponent, Carol Sue Dakan, received 164 votes.Three seats on the Colorado City Council were up for grabs, although one race was contested. J. Craig Jolley will serve as council member for District #2, as he defeated his opponent Robert McNeal by eleven votes (37 to 26).Sammy Contreras obtained 36 votes to become Colorado City council member for District #1. In addition, Keith Hiser received 82 votes and will serve as District #5 council member.The official canvass of the Colorado City elections will be conducted on Tuesday, May 21 at the regular city council meeting.Regarding education, the Blackwell CISD (Consolidated Independent School District) school board held an election for three seats. James Sanderson, Rick Stanford, and Jody Bell were elected by voters to serve on the board.Additionally, the Roscoe Collegiate ISD Board of Trustees held a Bond Election for the construction of a $3.5 million Capstone Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) Research Center. The measure passed with a vote of 158 for to 57 against.In the event of a successful election (based upon conservative tax base and interest rate projections), the $3.5 million bond can be issued without an increase in the current I&S (Interest & Sinking) tax rate, which is the debt service rate, due to the fact that property values in RCISD are significantly higher than originally estimated at the time the current debt service rate was approved by voters in November 2008 Bond Election, according to RCISD administration.The Roscoe Collegiate Capstone STEM Research Center will be the final component of the Roscoe Collegiate System Model, which is being developed for scalability for Educate Texas at the state level and Jobs for the Future at the national level.
