Local Lock-Up raises over $23K for MDA
A total of $23,807 was raised on Wednesday for the Muscular Dystrophy Association during the annual MDA Lock-Up that took place at the Sweetwater fire station. According to organizers, this year has raised the most money ever in Sweetwater during an MDA Lock-Up. A total of 32 "Jailbirds" contributed to the money raised, getting donations from businesses, organizations and individuals for the cause. The Muscular Dystrophy Association issued “arrest warrants” for many executives and community leaders in Sweetwater, Colorado City, Roscoe, Loraine and other surrounding areas. As members of the area’s “Most Wanted” these jailbirds were “Locked Up” to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association and the families they serve. Their sentence was to serve one hour of “hard time” at MDA’s jail site. “Jailbirds” were picked up by volunteers from the Sweetwater Fire Department in vehicles loaned for the event by Stanley Ford in Sweetwater. While “incarcerated,” they dined on food donated by Skeet’s Texas Grill and Allen Family Style Meals, with drinks donated by Chicken Express. Brookshire's also provided volunteers to help with event activities. This year’s jailbirds were each encouraged to raise $800 in bail in order to be released. This reflects the cost of sending one child to MDA summer camp for a week in Ceta Canyon. The funds raised will also enable MDA to provide the very best in health care services, including clinic visits, flu shots, support groups, repairs to durable medical equipment, summer camp, diagnostic testing and a worldwide research effort seeking treatments and cures for the 40+ neuromuscular diseases covered by the association. MDA’s Red River Chapter currently serves over 400 families affected by neuromuscular diseases.MDA (www.mda.org) is a voluntary health agency working to provide programs of worldwide research, comprehensive services, and far-reaching professional and public health education for neuromuscular diseases. All money raised locally benefits local families.
