Local man killed in plane crash

At 5:32 p.m. on Sunday, July 20, the Nolan County Sheriff's Office received a call in reference to a missing aircraft in southern Nolan County. Family members reported that Weldon Pat Oden, 71, of Blackwell, had taken off in a single engine aircraft from a private air field at approximately 12 p.m. and had not returned. A search of the area near the private air field was conducted and the single engine plane was located a short distance from the airfield, about 6.9 miles west of Blackwell in Nolan County. Mr. Oden was the only occupant in the aircraft at the time of the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene Judge Sharon Gardner around 9:52 p.m. His body was taken to McCoy Funeral Home in Sweetwater.
