FORT WORTH, TEXAS – Elizabeth Rozzlle of Blackwell, a Blackwell FFA student, was among the winners in the Calf Scramble event during the Jan. 30, 7:30 evening performance of the Rodeo at the 115th edition of the legendary Southwestern Exposition and Livestock Show. Parents of the winner are Jerry and Laura Rozzlle. Sponsors for Elizabeth's effort are Marty and Mary Martha Richter of Fort Worth.
The Calf Scramble, which allows 16 students to compete at each of the 30 Stock Show Rodeo performances, celebrates its 25th anniversary during the 2011 Fort Worth Stock Show Rodeo. With hopes of winning a $500 purchase certificate, high school students set out to catch and halter a calf. Once a calf is caught, students are presented a certificate that will assist them in purchasing a registered beef or dairy heifer for a yearlong 4-H or FFA project.
Winners must care for their animals throughout the year and return for the 2012 Stock Show to exhibit their animal in the Junior Heifer Show. Those who follow the monthly guidelines place themselves in the running for college scholarship funds. Last year, scholarships totaling $113,500 were granted to 56 winning scramblers.
All entries receive a special 25th anniversary t-shirt with their contestant number, while participants who fail to catch a calf receive a certificate for a pair of Justin boots. Mrs. Baird’s Bakeries and Justin Boots have proudly sponsored this event for many years.
The nation’s oldest livestock show is currently underway now through Feb. 5 at Will Rogers Memorial Center. The Stock Show features 23 days of family fun and entertainment, and will host over 22,000 head of livestock entries throughout the run. In addition to the prestigious livestock competitions, the Stock Show offers many interactive educational exhibits, great shopping in the commercial exhibits area, an exciting carnival /midway and 30 thrilling performances of the World’s Original Indoor Rodeo.
