Lowell Clovis Epps passed away Tuesday, June 25, 2013, in Kerrville, Texas.
Clovis previously resided for many years in Sweetwater, Texas.Â
Clovis was born April 13, 1928, in Coryell County, Texas, to Jonnie Morris and Jim Epps. He graduated from Turnersville High School in 1945. After graduating high school, he served in the U.S. Merchant Marines and the U.S. Marine Corps at the end of WW II. After his military service, he attended Baylor University. He was the owner-manager of the Credit Bureau of Sweetwater for over 16 years and thereafter worked at Ludlum Measurements in Sweetwater until his retirement in 1997.
Clovis was active in many organizations in Sweetwater. He was a member, deacon, elder and board member of the First Christian Church of Sweetwater. He was also a member and former director, president and member of the year of the Kiwanis Club of Sweetwater, and helped organize the first chapter of the Key Club at Sweetwater High School. He also spent countless hours with his three sons and volunteering for many Sweetwater youth athletic organizations, including his service as president of the Sweetwater High School Booster Club and the National League Youth Baseball Association.
Clovis is survived by his wife of 57 years, Mildred Shields Epps, who he married on June 16, 1956; three sons, John Epps and his wife Michelle Epps of Kerrville, Gary Epps of Beeville and Jerry Epps of Austin; grandchildren, John Epps, Jr. of Hurst, Amanda Pate and her husband Jeff Pate of Grandbury and Kristen Ramirez of San Antonio; great-grandchild, Ryan Ramirez; his sister, Lavaliene âJoâ Nichols of Waco; brother, Barney Epps of Arlington; and many nieces and nephews.Â
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jonnie Morris and Jim Epps; and his brothers, Jim Epps of Omaha, Neb. and Hugh Epps of San Angelo.
He loved his family, his friends, his church and his community. He was a devoted husband, loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather and loyal friend. He was our hero.
Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. on Friday, June 28, 2013, at McCoy Funeral Home,401 East Third Street in Sweetwater.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 29, 2013, at the First Christian Church, 1611 Hailey in Sweetwater. Burial services will follow at the Garden of Memories Cemetery, 6412 IH 20 Frontage Road in Sweetwater. Funeral arrangements are under the care and direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
