Graveside services by a full U.S. Army Military Honor Guard for Lt. Col. Ret. Charles William "Larry" Lawrence, Sr., 90, of Sweetwater will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 13, 2014, at Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Abilene. Rev. Robert Singleton will officiate and interment will follow under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.Lawrence died Friday, Feb. 7, 2014, at Nolan Nursing and Rehab in Sweetwater.He was born July 15, 1923, in Isabel, Kan. He married Margaret Jane Thomas on March 31, 1942.He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Sweetwater. He was a retired Lt. Col. from the U.S. Army for 30 years. He worked for the Abilene Reporter News as Aviation Editor and Book Review Editor for 15 years. He graduated from Amarillo High School and attended Amarillo Junior College. He worked in the Pentagon during his last two years of service before retiring. He served on the Nolan County Library Board and was a long-time member of the Sweetwater Lions Club. He had lived in Sweetwater since 1989. He served in the Royal Canadian Air Force, United States Marine Corps, United States Navy and United States Army.Survivors include his wife, Peggy Lawrence of Sweetwater; son, Charles Lawrence, Jr. and wife Salmah of Abilene; daughters, Garna Perry Fisher of Sweetwater and Stephanie Singleton and husband Robert of Austin; brother, Jere Lawrence of Amarillo; daughter-in-law, Karen Lawrence of Silverton, Oregon; eight grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.He was preceded in death by a son, Larry Allen Lawrence; and two sons-in-law, Leonard Perry and Billy Fisher.Pallbearers will be the U.S. Army Military Honor Guard.
