Mary Jo Brown Egger passed away Saturday, Feb. 8, 2014, at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital in Sweetwater.
Mary Jo was born Sept. 7, 1926, at Nolan, Texas to Jesse Peyton and Noba Buchanan Brown. She attended Divide Schools graduating in May 1944.
She married Windell Egger, the love of her life, on April 10, 1945. Windell served in the U.S. Navy during WWII and then in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. During those years they lived in California, Kansas, Indiana, Kentucky and Colorado. After Windell’s discharge they bought a farm in Sugar City, Colorado where they remained until March of 1957. Mary Jo and Windell returned to Nolan at that time where they worked side by side farming and ranching for the next 50 plus years. She has continued living at their home even after Windell’s death. Mary Jo and Windell were active members of the Nolan Baptist Church and later at the Lamar Street Baptist Church in Sweetwater. They were also both involved in founding and continued support of the Nolan-Divide Community Center.
Mary Jo is survived by her daughter, Victoria Hanes and husband Randy of Sweetwater; her son, Jeffrey Egger of Nolan; and her only grandchild, Aubrey Hanes of San Angelo.
She is also survived by two sisters, Dorothy Jarratt of Lubbock and Ansa Lane Boyd and husband Bob of Lovington, N.M.; two sisters-in-law, Sue Brown of Lubbock and Helen Brown of Levelland; a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Martha and John Wever of Dallas; as well as a whole host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Mary Jo was preceded in death by her husband Windell Egger on Aug. 17, 2007; her parents, Jess and Noba Brown; her In-laws, Alvie and Jewel Egger; a sister, Clara Mae Boyd; two brothers, Arnold M. Brown and Jesse Peyton Brown, Jr.; and a brother-in-law, Royce Egger.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 13, 2014, at Lamar Street Baptist Church in Sweetwater with the Rev. Ronnie Newton, Rev. Billy Oliver and Rev. Keith Clifton officiating. Interment will follow at Slater’s Chapel Cemetery near Nolan, all under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
There will be a family visitation from 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2014, at McCoy Funeral Home, 401 East Third Street in Sweetwater.
Pallbearers will be her nephews, Jim Jarratt, Stephen Brown, Brent Brown, Payton Brown, James Shelton, Rod Egger and C.E. Boyd, Jr.
Honorary pallbearers will be Bill Wilson, David Linn, Jimmy Davis, Raymond Lambert, Dale Finch and Jerry Black.
