Mayes leads SW’s win

Once again, Sweetwater’s Kris Mayes was his dominating self on the mound Tuesday against Midland Greenwood. And just for good measure, the Mustang pitcher brought a big bat to Newman Park as he led his team to a 3-0 victory.Mayes (1-2) — who tossed an eight-inning one-hitter and struck out 16 in his most recent outing three days earlier at Sweetwater’s annual Wood Bat Classic, but took a hard-luck loss due to a couple of late errors — got the victory this time, though he was in a scoreless pitching duel for the first four innings. However, Mayes changed that with one swing of the bat. With Cameron Fox on base after a leadoff single, he belted a home run in the fifth inning to give the Mustangs a 2-0 lead. Then he returned to the mound and set down the Rangers in order over the last two innings to com-plete a five-hit shutout.Sweetwater is now 9-2-1 as it prepares for a three-day tournament at Abilene that begins with a 2 p.m. game against district rival Wylie at Wylie’s field on Thursday. Sweetwater also plays Shallowater at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at McMurry University’s Driggers Field.Mayes, who struck out eight and walked just one and allowed just one runner past second base, also blasted a one-out triple in the third inning. Sweetwater added an insurance run in the sixth inning when Wil-lie Norman reached on an error and scored on Ryan Linebaugh’s groundout.
