Mayor Greg Wortham stopped by Sweetwater Middle School on Friday, Nov. 4, 2011 as part of the Speaker's Bureau sponsored by SEED (Sweetwater Enterprise of Economic Development).
The Eighth Grade Career Investigations classes at SMS, taught by Irene Armstrong, learned about ways to approach and prepare for careers from Mr. Wortham. He offered a look at how different events and experiences in his own life — as early as middle school — helped him and are even used today in his employment.
Though he serves as the Mayor of Sweetwater and also on the City Commission, Mr. Wortham is involved in both wind and solar energy and is also an attorney. His professions have allowed him to partake in business ventures in almost every state in the country while also giving him the opportunity to travel internationally for his work.
The Speaker's Bureau not only takes place in Sweetwater ISD but in the Roscoe school district as well. Its purpose is four-fold: linking the business world to the classroom from a local standpoint, showing students to a variety of opportunities within their community, presenting the importance and connection of math and science within the speaker's occupation and allowing for interactivity among the speaker and the students during the presentation.
At SMS, four other dates are scheduled leading up to the Christmas holidays with other dates being planned for the second semester after the New Year.
