Medication cleanout planned for March 19

March 12, 2011

If your medicine cabinet hasn't been cleaned out in awhile (or ever), a chance to do so is coming up.
On Saturday, March 19, a Medication Cleanout will be held at the Sweetwater High School. It will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and will be done as a drive through.
Medication Cleanout was originated through the Safe Schools/Healthy Students Program with the Amarillo Independent School District and the Texas Panhandle Poison Center with Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center.
Since September 1999, Medication Cleanout events have taken place in areas such as Amarillo, Canyon, Dallas, and even as far as Richmond, VA. Before coming to Sweetwater, an event was held in Borger. The Sweetwater event will be followed by an April Cleanout in Amarillo.
The Cleanout serves as a way to keep families safe from the threat of poisonings, abuse and misuse prevention, and as a way to protect the environment.
Poisoning deaths rank second only to motor vehicle accidents from unintentional injury in the US. In addition, prescription medication abuse is being reported as the fastest growing drug problem in the nation.
Prescription and non-prescription medicines, pet medications and sample medications and vitamin/herbal supplements and nebulizer solutions will be accepted and must be left in their original containers
Please do not bring IV fluid bags, oxygen tanks, nebulizer and glucometer machines, or loads from clinics, nursing homes, church groups or healthcare facilities.
According to their website, "The purpose of the project is to remove pharmaceuticals from homes, schools and the streets. Nationwide trends indicate that among teens, pharmaceutical abuse is second only to marijuana abuse."
The service is being provided free of charge and is being supported by the Sweetwater Police Department and Sweetwater ISD.
