Ryan Mercer qualified for the third straight year, but Sweetwater as a team fell short Monday in its bid to advance to the Region I-3A boys golf tournament in Lubbock.
Mercer finished with a 225 total after shooting a 77 in the final round of the District 5-3A tournament, which was held at Sweetwater Country Club. He placed third among all medalists, but first among those not on one of the top two teams. Mercer and Julio Villanueva of Snyder (232) qualified as medalists. Mercer, last yearâ€™s district champion, finished behind Blake Brorman of Big Spring (211) and Taylor Grant of Wylie (223) this time. Big Spring (935) and Wylie (943) will advance to regionals April 20-21 as the top two teams, while Sweetwater finished third at 968 after shooting 329 in Mondayâ€™s final round.
Sweetwaterâ€™s other individual scores on the team came from Dylan Torres, who shot 79 for a 239 total, Alex Castillo (88-251), Mason Andrews (85-253) and Guy Bond (90-270).
Mercer and Torres, who finished eighth among district medalists, earned all-district recognition.
Mercer, a junior and two-year letterman, is the son of Sweetwater boys golf coach Steve Mercer.
Sweetwaterâ€™s No. 2 boys golf team shot 398 in its final round Monday to place ninth at 1,150. Jonah Lawrence led the way for the Mustangsâ€™ second unit he shot 87-264.
The other members of Sweetwaterâ€™s No. 2 team were Yates Cypert (104-290), Joey Adames (105-300), Michael Hazard (102-301) and Rance Stone (114-318). Today, the Sweetwater girls finish district play at Snyder.
