Former Sweetwater High School assistant coach Shane Mobley has been named as the lone finalist to be the school's new head football coach and athletic director.
The decision was announced Tuesday afternoon in a news release from the Sweetwater ISD. Mobley, currently the assistant head coach and defensive coordinator at Seguin High School, will be presented for approval to Sweetwater ISD's school board when it meets Monday night after being named as the lone finalist from a pool of over 100 applicants.
According to the press release, the board will vote to hire Mobley shortly after the start of its meeting set for 5:30 p.m. Monday as the Sweetwater ISD administration building. Should Mobley's hiring be approved by the board, he will be present and available for questions and comments immediately afterward at the administration building.
This would be the first head football coaching job for Mobley, though he has enjoyed tremendous success as an assistant.
He served as defensive coordinator here under Kent Jackson from 2004-07 when Sweetwater compiled a 41-12 record, including a trip to the Class 3A state semifinals in 2005. He was then an assistant at Class 3A Prosper which won a state championship in 2008, and also coached at Class 2A Sonora which won a state championship in 2000.
Seguin, which is a Class 5A school, was 2-8 this past season while competing in District 25-5A.
Mobley's wife, Tecka, also has strong ties here. She is a former student in the Sweetwater ISD and she served as the high school softball coach during her husband's previous employment in Sweetwater. The couple has two children: Hannah, who is a fifth grader, and Hunter, who is in the seventh grade.
Shane Mobley would replace former SHS coach Craig Slaughter, who resigned two weeks ago after serving as the head football coach and athletic director the past three years. Slaughter, who had a 9-21 record at Sweetwater, is now head football coach at Llano.
