On Sunday, Feb. 19, 2012, just before 2 p.m. there were two wrecks near the 255 mile marker close to the Adrian Road bridge. One car lost control, crossed the center barrier and was hit multiple times by oncoming traffic including an 18-wheeler in the west bound lanes. On the east bound side, a car swerved to miss debris and rolled over. There were a number of cars involved on that side as well.Â
All together there were 10 people in six different cars involved. Sweetwater Fire Department took two ambulances, their rescue truck and a fire engine because of reports of one of the cars being on fire. Merkel EMS assisted with two ambulances and a Native Air helicopter from Abilene came and flew one critical patient.
"Trent Volunteer Fire Department helped so at the wreck. They were great. They handled most of the patient packaging and triage for us while we extricated one and tended to the seriously injured. I was so glad they were there," stated Sweetwater Emergency Services Director Grant Madden.
A total of seven patients were transported to area hospitals with serious to minor injuries. Traffic was shut down for hours since there is no access road for that overpass.
"We have had the busiest month in a long time with the big wrecks and other thing going on in the area," said Madden.
