Mustangs’ hopes hinge on beating Steers today

April 20, 2012

Sweetwater Mustang baseball potential playoff outlook

Despite a 2-5 record in district play and an 11-0 loss to Snyder here Tuesday, the Sweetwater High School baseball team enters today’s regular season finale against Big Spring with solid hopes of reaching the playoffs for the first time since 2004.
However, those hopes depend on whether the Mustangs can rebound and knock off the Steers (3-4) when the teams match up starting at 7 p.m. today at Newman Park. If that happens, Sweetwater would then force a two-way tie with Big Spring for the third and final playoff berth, or be locked up in a three-way tie that would also include Brownwood if the Lions (2-5) beat Snyder today.
Wylie (7-1), which has completed its season, and Snyder (4-3) have locked up berths. Snyder will be the No. 2 team if Sweetwater wins today, or if Snyder and Big Spring both win their games. If the season ends with a two- or three-way tie for third place, the teams would have a mini-playoff to decide the No. 3 berth.
