After losing five games to bad weather this past week at the Abilene tournament, the Sweetwater High School baseball team hosted a tough Andrews squad on Monday.
Unfortunately, the visi-ting Mustangs took the lead with a five-run third inning and left town with a 13-2, six-inning victory at Newman Park.
Andrews finished with 15 hits off three Sweetwater pitchers as the Mustangs’ record fell to 6-5-1.
Sweetwater will be back on the road to face Wall at 11 a.m. Friday for its final pre-district game. The team will host Wylie in its 5-3A opener next Tuesday.
Monday’s game was tied 1-1 until Andrews’ big uprising in the third. Andrews also scored five runs in the sixth inning to end the game prematurely, while getting single tallies in three other frames.
Sweetwater briefly tied it 1-1 in the second when Dylan Bennett doubled, went to third on Brandon Howell’s single and scored on Kaleb Hoover’s ground ball. Sweetwater scored its other run in the third when James Clift singled, went to third on two Andrews errors and came home on Sean Morrow’s sacrifice fly. Greg Aiken had two of Sweetwater’s six hits and Stephen May also hit safely, while Hoover, Howell and Clift took the mound.
