ROBY — Since a 4-1 start, little has gone right for the Sweetwater boys basketball team in the past month.
But that changed, at least for one night, on Tuesday when the Mustangs visited Roby and won 43-40.
Sweetwater’s 6-8 senior post, Paxton Kelley, scored 19 points as the Mustangs (6-12) won for only the second time in 13 games.
Roby led 7-6 after one quarter, but Kelley hit three straight baskets to fuel an 8-0 run at the start of the second period and Sweetwa-ter led 19-16 at halftime.
Sweetwater lost its lead in the early part of the third period, but a Kelley-led 14-5 run gave the Mustangs a 36-28 lead going into the fourth. Kelley hit a three-pointer from just past half-court — barely beating the third-period buzzer — to complete the rally. But the Lions fought back yet again by getting within a point twice, the last time at 41-40 with 1:24 to play.
Roby then had two chances to take the lead, but Sweetwater managed to hold on in the final minute of play and eventually secured the win when Kelley hit two free throws in the final nine seconds of the game.
Sweetwater, which had lost six straight since a 36-33 win over Breckenridge here Dec. 14, has two more tuneups for district. The team goes to Ballinger on Friday, then entertains San Angelo Lake View next Tuesday before going to Wylie for its 5-3A opener. Dylon Adames had 10 points against Roby, while Taylor Jones and Gabriel Medellin had five points and Ryan Mercer and B.J. Walker two each.
